Moving landlines to digital technologies

28 May 2025

The Panel has been aware for some time of the need to share the news with all landline users about the move to digital technologies - we believe that if landline users are aware, then they can be prepared.

We have urged Ofcom, government and industry to provide information across multiple channels, so that all landline users and friends and family members who contact them by phone, can be made aware of what was happening and anything they needed to do. This is even more important for landline users who have additional services using their landline, such as telecare devices.

While most landline users will be able to wait for their communications provider (such as BT or Virgin Media-O2) to contact them, for landline users who have additional services that require extra support it is vitally important that their provider knows all the facts about their services in advance, giving them time to prepare to move the landline safely across. We welcome this information being shared across the UK, to protect people and to help them stay connected.
